Glen Ewin Estate at Houghton grows figs on a terraced orchard of around 12,000 trees, and opens it for picking through the late summer harvest. Five varieties ripen across the season, from Black Genoa to the pale Spanish Desert, and the estate pairs the picking with a cellar door restaurant and a bar serving its own fig gin.
Entry is $5 per person with under-12s free, and figs are charged at $15/kg on top. Picking runs roughly 9am to 3pm daily in season, from 10am on weekdays, with extended Sunday sessions. Outside food and drink are not permitted because of fruit fly and phylloxera biosecurity rules, so plan to eat on site.
Pro tip: figs do not ripen after picking, so take the soft heavy ones that give slightly under a thumb.
