Jay Berries is a family-run berry farm on Wandin Creek Road in Wandin East, about 50 minutes from Melbourne in the Yarra Valley. It is a smaller, quieter alternative to the district's big-name farms, with a simple weigh-and-pay system and a friendly welcome that regulars rave about.
Homegrown seasonal vegetables are often available at the farm gate too.
U-Pick entry is $10 for adults (15+), $5 for children (4-14), $8 concession and free for under 4s, then you pay per kilo for what you take home. Open 8.30am-4.30pm six days a week (closed every Saturday) from October to May. Strawberries are usually reliable; for other berries, phone ahead to check what's ripe before you visit. The weigh-and-pay system keeps things simple: pick what you like, have it weighed at the shed, and pay only for what you take, with punnets and guidance provided for first-timers.
Pro tip: visit midweek for the pick of the patch without the crowds.
