Farnsworth Apple & Cherry Orchard is a century-old family orchard on Paringa Road at Red Hill South, where the Farnsworth family planted their first 40 acres in the 1920s. Around 20 cherry varieties and hybrids grow here, and the farm gate keeps selling crisp apples for most of the year after the summer cherry crowds have gone.
Apples are sold at the farm gate from March right through to November.
Prices are set each season and paid by weight; phone ahead to confirm picking days and how the crop is ripening. The orchard is a quieter alternative to the Peninsula's busier cherry farms, with the depth of varieties that a century of planting brings. Paringa Road sits in the middle of Red Hill's food and wine country, so the orchard combines easily with cellar doors and the village cafes, and apples picked in autumn store well for weeks somewhere cool.
Pro tip: ask which of the 20 varieties is at peak; the family knows the trees by name.
