Edible Forest at Dixons Creek is Victoria's largest food forest, with more than 300 edible and medicinal plant species growing across the hillside at Yarra Valley Estate. Featured on ABC's Gardening Australia, it offers a different kind of picking day: a one-hour guided Tour, Taste and Educate walk where you pick and taste whatever is ripe as you go.
Tours are $27.50 for adults, $5 for children 4-6 and free under 4 (children 7+ pay adult price; groups of 10+ $22 each), with picking and tasting included in the price rather than paid by weight. Bookings are essential; winter tours run limited days with fewer fruit tastings. Paths suit wheelchairs and prams. The nursery is stocked with many of the same fruit trees, berries and herbs you taste on the walk, so a tour often ends with a boot full of plants for the home garden.
Pro tip: book a late-summer tour, when the widest spread of the forest is fruiting at once.
