Adelaide's fruit picking tradition is inseparable from South Australia's reputation as a premium food and wine region. The Adelaide Hills, rising sharply from the plains just 20 minutes from the CBD, provide cool-climate growing conditions that have attracted orchardists since the 1840s.

The Hills' elevation of 400-700 metres creates temperatures several degrees cooler than Adelaide, extending ripening periods and developing complex fruit flavours. Historic towns like Stirling, Hahndorf, and Birdwood are surrounded by cherry orchards, berry farms, and apple groves that paint the hillsides with blossoms each spring. The region's Germanic heritage is reflected in its orderly orchards and commitment to traditional fruit growing methods.

To the north, the Barossa Valley's warm days and cool nights, combined with ancient soils, support stone fruit production alongside its famous vineyards. The McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Peninsula add coastal influences to the mix. Adelaide's picking season centres on the spectacular cherry harvest in November-December, extending through summer stone fruits and into autumn apple picking.
